5 Work Habits That Will Help You Get Promoted
5 Work Habits That Will Help You Get Promoted5 Work Habits That Will Help You Get PromotedIf you have your eye on avorrcken, chances are youre thinking about the big moves that can get you there. Youre planning how you can save your company money, showcase your big wins, and impress the right people. The big things are important, and so are the day-to-day habits that get you noticed in the right way. Consider moves you can make on a regular basis to tischset yourself up for the next step in your career.1. Be visibleYou cant get a promotion if no one knows youre there. Strike a balance between time that youre at your desk working hard and the time youre collaborating with others, presenting to the team, or joining in a group activity. Its important to make sure youre at the forefront of peoples minds when an opportunity arises, and part of that is literally being in front of people on a regular basis. It could be something as simple as eatinglunchin the lunchroom instead of your desk, or taking a long or alternative route back from the bathroom to say hi to your co-workers. Even your presence in optional meetings or company updates could make a big difference.2. Drop everythingWhen you tell someone you have time to chat, help, or answer a question, really mean it. Put down your phone, close your laptop, and listen. People notice and appreciate it when you give your undivided attention, and they can also feel it when youre only half listening. Resist the urge to craft an answer while the other person speaks and hear them out first. Consider how you are making others feel when they approach you. You dont always need to be available, but when you are, be fully available.3. Get personalBreak out of work mode every once in a while. Show people that you care by asking them about their recent vacation, marathon training, or childs birthday. Your teammates will notice and appreciate that youve remembered something personal about them. You dont have to pry, just build on information they have already shared with you and create a connection beyond your shared projects. It will help to build camaraderie and trust.4. Create championsWho are you helping? Consider what extra projects or support outside of your day-to-day work will set you up for success. If you want to be prompted to aleadershiprole, you might consider being amentorto team members who are more junior. Youll help them advance their careers and have someone singing your praises. Are you looking to move to a new team? See how you can support that part of the business to demonstrate your transferrable skills. You dont need to do all of yourPRon your own. Help others so theyll also spread the word. Take a proactive approach in choosing which extra projects are suited for your career advancement rather than agreeing to every request that comes across your desk. Be selective in whom and how you help to be sure you arent spreading yourself too thin.5. Slow downMistakes are most likely to happen when youre moving too fast. When youre gunning for a promotion, the pressure is on. Consider taking the time to read an emaille through one extra time, you may also consider putting a delay on your outgoing messages. Also, set the right expectations around how quickly you can complete a project and give yourself some extra time by adjusting deadlines, if possible. Its far better to provide something early than miss a deadline that was too tight. A little breathing room will go a long way.Theres a lot to keep track of when youre considering your next career move and how youll land a coveted promotion. In addition to major milestones, consider how your actions on a small scale can also make a big difference.

This five things are what makes a great recruiter
This five things are what makes a great recruiter This five things are what makes a great recruiter Executive recruiters come in a variety of styles - some are flashy and fast, others quiet and thoughtful. Some seem more like salesmen, while others operate like scientists.Whatever their approach, the best executive recruiters all possess certain internal traits that help them succeed - behavioral mechanics conducive to excellence. Here are five of the most critical.1. Great recruiters arenât afraid to ask questions (and donât make assumptions)Before they do anything else, great executive recruiters seek to understand their clientsâ needs. In turn, theyâre not afraid to admit when they donât know the answer to a clientâs question. That requires more humility than you might think. Executive recruiters face a certain amount of pressure to be seen as industry experts. As a result, many recruiters feel they have to provide immediate answers to every question their clients ask out of fear theyâll appear unprepared or undeserving of their search fee.But succumbing to this an xiety isnât just tempting - itâs also dangerous.Recruiters preoccupied with perception skip steps in favor of seeming smart. They make assumptions, rely on surface-level conceptions of what it is a client wants in a new hire, and ultimately produce answers that are inadequate at best and irrelevant at worst.Good executive recruiters resist that impulse. They know theyâll never have an answer for every one of their clientsâ questions. They also know that when they donât fully understand a clientâs question or request, what they need to do is to obtain more information, even if it means risking sounding unprepared. This is something I, and a lot of other experienced recruiters, still struggle with- but in 99% of client engagements, asking questions is the key to search success.2. Great recruiters are able to find the answers they donât yet haveOf course, itâs not enough to simply ask questions. Quality executive recruiters also need to be able to put their money wher e their mouth is and track down mission-critical information when thatâs what theyâve promised to do.In other words: great executive recruiters follow through.Often, what that entails is conducting thorough and thoughtful research. This might look like scouring obscure texts about frameworks and systems relevant to the role youâre recruiting for. It might mean familiarizing yourself with federal compliance standards, and it most definitely means understanding the industry your client operates in.But it also requires a certain awareness. Beware of paralysis by analysis. In conducting a search for a software developer, for example, you donât need to teach yourself how to write code - but you should know how programming languages differ. What it really comes down to is competence and reliability. If youâre not able to conduct research in this way - if youâre not able to deliver information requested of you by a client - you will never be able to complete searches successf ully at scale.3. Great recruiters inspire confidence through a process-driven approachAs an executive recruiter, one of your more implicit jobs throughout the search process is to inspire confidence in your client that by hiring you, theyâve made the right decision. What separates the low performers from the experts is the manner in which they accomplish this. Average recruiters seek to appear qualified. These are the folks who pretend to have all the answers, who offer nothing but bluff, bluster, and a slurry of buzzwords.Professionals, meanwhile, inspire confidence with a process-driven approach- one proven to produce results. These are the kinds of executive recruiters who enjoy continued success over time, the sort that builds upon itself and earns them a reputation. They donât need to sell themselves or convince a client that theyâre working hard, because they can point to the machine theyâve built, the results it has generated, and let that do the talking.Searches conduc ted by recruiters who eschew process or donât lend it this sort of credence turn out to be disasters.4. Great recruiters have high standards for themselves- and their workHereâs the truth about maintaining efficient and inspiring processes: in order to do it, you have to hold yourself and those on your team to a certain standard of professionalism and excellence.Executive recruiting is a lot of work. It entails outbound engagement with candidates, client management, process management - a veritable orchestra of responsibility.Great recruiters ensure the mechanics of their process stay finely tuned. They arrive to meetings and status calls on time and well prepared. They use platforms like Clockwork Recruiting to stay organized and keep all relevant reports and research findings in one collaborative space. Moreover, they donât make excuses.5. Great recruiters like what they do and want to get betterAs with any profession, to be great at executive recruiting, you have to want to be great. You have to want to improve. The reason? Executive recruiting is athletic. Itâs competitive. Itâs hard, and it requires a certain commitment. You have to push yourself. And in order to do that on a regular basis, you have to want to get better at it.If you donât, youâll fall behind. Simple as that. Because elsewhere, other recruiters do want to improve and are working harder than you every minute to do just that.Executive search is hard. There are times when youâll fail or become demoralized. But what separates average recruiters from those who are transcendent are the internal skills- the mechanisms churning like pistons beneath your rib cage that can only be learned over time. Thatâs what powers you to work harder than the competition. At the end of the day, it doesnât matter if youâre flashy or slick. What matters is that internal machinery. This post was originally published on Quora.com.

Dont Let Bad Reviews Drain Your Hiring Pool
Donât Let Bad Reviews Drain Your Hiring Pool Donât Let Bad Reviews Drain Your Hiring Pool In the study âRules of Attraction: Job Seekers Use Negative News to Filter Initial Search,â Cornell University found that job seekers often use negative news and online reviews to filter their initial job search. This information has short- and long-term effects on whether or not a candidate will consider applying for a companyâs open position, which can have serious consequences on your companyâs hiring and recruitment efforts. Companies of any size may experience the insecurity of being on the wrong end of anonymous online reviews. The last thing you want prospective hires to do before contacting you is to worry about whether or not a disgruntled employeeâs anonymous review is true. As more companies begin to understand the far-reaching effects of employer branding, the next step is to put a plan in place to improve it. Part of the challenge of mitigating bad online reviews is that thereâs no standard rulebook for how to address them. Thatâs why you should make your own. To prevent recruitment damage from such reviews, pull in key stakeholders to discuss the following steps and establish your own recovery process. 1. Establish an awareness baseline âIt is critical for companies and practitioners to be aware of the sources and variety of information available to job seekers- and to use that awareness to head off or turn around potential problems,â said the Cornell researchers. This is why your review recovery plan should start with a baseline awareness of how your brand is received online. Many HR managers already have a handle on their word-of-mouth reputation from years of face-to-face networking, but itâs important to bring the digital aspect into play because thatâs what your recruitment candidates will see. Perform a simple web search using your company name and analyze the search return the way a prospective hire would. If you have the budget, it may be worth working with a digital marketing firm to understand your options in pushing positive listings and branded pages to rank higher than anonymous online review sites. 2. Consider your response to candidates Are you prepared to discuss your companyâs online reviews in a candidate interview? And could you provide a well-framed response if you received an inquiring phone call from a prospective hire about the issues addressed in the review? Once your HR team and other major stakeholders understand the lay of the digital landscape, pull together an official response to employees and prospective hires. Provide a context for this story by creating a narrative that makes sense and addresses any concerns a candidate might have about the company or the position. 3. Put a maintenance plan into place When your team has a firm grasp on the situation, make a multi-faceted plan that you can use for existing bad reviews and preventative company culture maintenance. This plan should give you a way to stay in the know about your company, such as setting up a Google alert and monitoring review sites for new reviews and mentions. It should also include instructions for quickly reacting to online and in-person reviews in a sincere and transparent way. For preventative maintenance, take a close look at your exit interview strategy. Provide employees with an opportunity to vent their grievances in person rather than taking their negative feelings with them when they go. An atmosphere of constant feedback and conversation between HR, new employees and existing employees will create a company culture thatâs harder to complain about. 4. Educate and communicate with your team about the plan The most effective plan (and the happiest work environment) is one with buy-in, so the final step in mitigating bad online reviews is educating and communicating with your team. Your team needs to know what to do when employees hear or see something that might affect the companyâs employer brand. If employees feel educated and empowered to communicate with HR on daily issues, they will be less likely to bottle up their complaints for a negative online review when they leave the company. One bad review doesnât have to ruin your entire employer brand reputation. If you act quickly and proactively to mitigate the outcome, you can control the effect your digital reputation has on your recruiting efforts.

4 Things to Do to Revive a Stalled Job Search
4 Things to Do to Revive a Stalled Job Search 4 Things to Do to Revive a Stalled Job Search Hoping Santa will bring you a new career for Christmas? Wishing for a professional change is easy â" but taking action to land a new job is grueling work. Often, job seekers start off with a bang, but what can you do when your efforts fail to get results? Here are four things you can do today to revive a stalled search.First, do you have a thesis (and is it realistic)? Most job seekers stagnate because they don't have a clear idea about how their background makes them an ideal employee. In high school and college, the papers that get an A are the ones with a clear thesis and ample evidence that supports the point of view. The same is true in job searching. If you cannot communicate (through your resume, profile and interview) why you are a good hire â" trust me, employers won't be able to figure it out either. Clarity of purpose and value are key to a successful search. Also, your goal or goals should be realistic. For example, if you are returning to work and your skills require so me updating, targeting a role at the most in-demand, cutting-edge tech firm is not highly probable. It might happen, but you have many more barriers than you might with more reasonable expectations. A great way to test your expectations is to look at job descriptions online for desired roles. If your background is a 70 to 80 percent match, the role is on target. If you are less than 60 percent qualified, convincing a manager that you are a fit will require savvy networking and ample preparation. If you aren't up for that challenge or are finding the results lacking, time to adjust your targets.[See: 10 Things New Grads Can Do Right Now to Get a Job.]Next, are you using the best tools? Your resume and your LinkedIn profile are the first things almost every potential employer reviews before deciding to request an interview. If you aren't getting any requests for interviews, there is a strong possibility that your resume and online presence are lacking. A common pitfall is displaying a lack of attention to detail, with typos, misspellings, not capitalizing proper nouns, inconsistent formatting, poor word choices and an overall disorganized layout. Using a variety of font types or point sizes and having no strategy regarding spacing can be very distracting to the reader.Online, the same care and proofreading is also essential. Often, people throw together a LinkedIn profile quickly. With over 467 million users on LinkedIn, a carelessly created profile can scare off hiring managers even if you have a well-crafted resume. Having an outdated or nonexistent presence online can deter recruiters who are looking for more savvy job seekers. Avoiding or dismissing online job searching is a mistake no job seeker should make. Take the time to make sure you have an impressive presence on the web.[See: 8 Things That Are More Productive Than Staring at a Job Board.]Third, do you have ample prospects? Looking for a job should mirror being in a sales role. In the technology indus try, for example, sales reps are expected to reach out to 50 or more prospects every day to create a productive funnel of business. While it is unlikely that you may have 250 positions to apply to every week, the average job seeker feels disappointed after applying to three to five positions without getting hired. That is only 1 percent of the activity expected of many sales professionals. To increase your prospects, make a list of people who think highly of you and would be willing to help you. You should have at least 20 people (and ideally many more). Contact your network and describe your career goal, such as, "I am looking for an accounting assistant role near San Jose, California." Ask if they have any advice regarding companies that are hiring or additional people with whom you should network. Write down everything they suggest. Resist the urge to argue about the validity of the advice or to tell them a sad story of all the things you have tried. Be positive, attentive and tha nkful. Conduct these meeting in person or over the phone if you can. This is not a mass email. Now, add all of their suggestions to your list of contacts.[See: How to Follow Up on a Job Application Without Being Annoying.]Fourth, and most importantly, take action. Every day, great prospective employees stall because they won't act. Apply to jobs, follow up on your applications, ask for advice, take the advice, proactively reach out to companies that align with your goals. Do more. Relying on only the most obvious job-search path means you must compete with the greatest amount of applicants. Less than 50 percent of positions are ever posted on a job board or company website. Proactively networking for your next role makes a significant difference and can help you stand out from other applicants. Furthermore, your willingness to act tells an employer that you are a problem-solver. Managers want someone who will get things done on their team.Looking for a new position can take a toll o n even the most confident person's self-esteem. Instead of letting the lack of success get to you, think of your search just like a sales professional builds his pipeline. Know how to articulate your value, have the best marketing materials ready to go (your resume, online profile), build a diverse prospect list and then take action. In summary, polite persistence pays off. Having an action-oriented plan in place can renew your confidence and reignite a stalled search.10 Ways to Perfect Your Personal Brand

Worlds First Precast Network Arch Bridge
Worlds First Precast Network Arch Bridge Worlds First Precast Network Arch Bridge As the bridge industry moves toward accelerated construction and precast components, the city of Fort Worth, TX, is ahead of the game with the worlds first precast-concrete network-arch bridge at a city gateway across the Trinity River. The bridge, which was designed by the Texas Department of Transportation and is being built by Tempe, AZ-based Sundt Construction, is scheduled to be completed this fall. The innovative design and construction came about when the City of Fort Worth approached the Texas Department of Transportation for help in replacing a 100-year-old bridge across a popular thoroughfare connecting downtown to a cultural district. Fort Worth wanted a landmark that would be aesthetically pleasing and would make an impressive statement to motorists and pedestrians in the area. But the city also wanted to make sure during construction there was minimal disruption of traffic across the bridge and throughout surrounding streets where commercial and retail development arejust getting up and running. A Good Solution TxDot engineers came up with the idea of marrying two types of bridge construction to meet Fort Worths requirements: a network-arch bridge and a precast-concrete bridge. A network-arch bridge is architecturally interesting but typically made of more costly steel and because it is built in place, it causes more disruption of traffic; a precast-concrete bridge, although not as aesthetically pleasing, is more economical, quicker to build, and requires much less lane closure time because the major components are built off-site. This is a very innovative idea, says Chris Cedar, Sundt civil group Texas area manager and the bridge project manager. Considering what Forth Worth was looking for, This seemed to be a good solution. The bridge is a series of 12 post-tensioned concrete arches, six on each side, which are the main structural elements. Each arch is 163 feet long and over 23 feet tall. While the new bridge will remain with four traffic lanes, it will be much wider to incorporate lanes outside the arches for pedestrians and cyclists. The plan called for building the precast arches off-site, with expected total bridge closure time of no more than 150 days, according to TxDot, much less than the typical 12 months or more using traditional bridge construction methods. Building the bridge. Image: Sundt Construction New Challenges When Sundt took on the project, the design was complete, but there were still some issues that had to be resolved, Cedar says. For example, engineers had not decidedhow to build the arches and transport over a million pounds gross vehicle weight over the existing original bridge built in 1913. We had to do a lot of analysis of the existing bridge to make sure we could transport the [arches], which were to be placed on columns alongside the existing bridge, he says. Sundt decided to cast the arches on their sides for efficiency and planned for unconventional post-tensioning, or reinforcement of the concrete with cables, by doing so in three stages. There were a lot of challenges associated with the form youd have to provide trying to cast them in a vertical position 23 feet tall, says Cedar. But casting the arches on their sides, which began in 2012 and was completed earlier this year, left a different sort of challengehow to get them vertical without being damaged. A first round of post-tensioning took place once the steel forms were stripped away. Then, Sundt came up with a way to pick up each arch, rotate it to a vertical position, and set the arch on beams. This was followed by another round of post-tensioning, and the arch was slid into a storage area where a third round of post-tensioning took place. The arches remained there until all were cast. When we started, casting the first arch took about six weeks. Cedar says. But by the time we cast the last ones, it was one about every three weeks. Work at the site, installing the drill shafts and columns, took place in spring, and the 12 arches were moved to the site on self-propelled mobile transports over a period of several weeks in May and June and put into place. The bridge closed in June for the final phase, which includes demolishing the old bridge and hanging beams across the arches that will hold the new roadway surface, which is being built in a conventional way. Cedar expects the bridge to be finished in early October and perhaps even sooner. We have 150 days to have the bridge back open, and a $900,000 incentive ($30,000 a day) to get it open 30 days earlier, he says. Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. For Further Discussion We have 150 days to have the bridge back open, and a $900,000 incentive to get it open 30 days earlier.Chris Cedar, Sundt Construction

3 Things You Have to Give Up if You Want to Be Successful
3 Things You Have to Give Up if You Want to Be Successful 3 Things You Have to Give Up if You Want to Be Successful An uncomfortable, but powerful, truth that took most of my twenties to internalize is this: Thereâs an opportunity cost to everything worthwhile in life. No matter what youâre trying to accomplish, youâll have to give up something in order to make it happen. In building my career as an author, speaker, and host of the Unmistakable Creative podcast, Iâve had to give up many things along the way. Here are the three big ones: 1. Other Peopleâs Definition of Success When I was in college, there was an unanimously agreed upon definition of what success looked like. While it wasnât explicitly stated, it was implied through peopleâs conversations, behaviors, and decisions. But by this definition, I was a complete failure. I had no prestigious jobs, no Ivy League MBA, and a bank balance that was close to zero upon graduating from Pepperdine in 2009. At 30 years old, I was basically starting from scratch. At some point, I realized that I had to give up other peopleâs definition of success. While this is one of the most difficult things to give up because itâs so deeply embedded in our cultural narrative, itâs also incredibly liberating and ultimately leads to the fullest expression of who you are and what matters to you. Other people arenât going to live with the consequences of the choices youâve made. So why would you live your life according to their values? In a conversation I had with Yanik Silver a few weeks ago, he told me a story about a client who wanted to become a billionaire. When he asked why, the client listed a number of reasons, most of which didnât require a billion dollars. By understanding the essence of our goals- what it is that we believe our achievements will bring us- itâs easier to give up other peopleâs expectations. 2. Fear of Judgement For years, Iâd have conversations with family friends and distant relatives about the work that I was doing. Every time I talked to one of them they would say, âSo, still blogging?â Trying to explain that there was far more to what I was doing felt like a lost cause. It reminded me of this conversation that Dani Shapiro referenced in her book, Still Writing: The Perils and Pleasures of a Creative Life: Iâve thought of all the times that Iâve been asked if Iâm still writing. Iâve been asked this by acquaintances and strangers, even by fans, readers of mineâ¦Iâve asked around and discovered that every artist and writer I know contends with a version of this question. Itâs asked of writers who are household names. Itâs asked of photographers whose work hangs in the Museum of Modern Art. Itâs asked of stage actors who have won Tonys. Of poets whose work is regularly published in the finest journals. No one who spends her life creating things seems exempt from it. The fear of being judged keeps so many of us from taking a shot at our most ambitious dreams. At a certain point, I realized it wasnât my job to convince the people that what I was doing was important, meaningful, and valuable. I had to give up the need to be validated by certain people. The people whose opinions I did truly value- my business partners and really close friends- didnât judge me at all. They supported me and could see a light at the end of the tunnel even in the moments that I couldnât. Once you give up your fear of judgment, your ability to work changes quite drastically. You become more present, productive, and start to gather creative momentum. You focus on the process, not the prize, and you start to see progress toward the life you want to live. 3. Any Baggage Related to the Past We all have a past. Itâs filled with wonderful experiences, and also filled with horrible things such as bad bosses or an ex or two that pulled the rug out from under us. At some point, you have to give up whatever resentment you have toward people, circumstances, and experiences from your past. Otherwise, your future starts to look an awful lot like your past. When you give all that up, you end up ditching a lot of baggage. You walk through the world with a sense of lightness, peace, and freedom that makes its way into everything else that you do. For years, I was angry at all the bosses who fired me. When I finally gave up this feeling up, I realized these people had given me a gift and lit a fire under me. Because ultimately, I wouldnât be doing what I am now if I hadnât been let go. Giving things up isnât just about sacrifice. Itâs also about gain. When you give things up you create an opening in your life for other things. If you want to live life on your terms, in the long run, you might have to give some things up in the short term. Maybe you sacrifice comfort and security in the present for a greater sense of possibility in the future. Ultimately, itâs up to you to define the meaning of success and what youâre willing to give up in order to have it- and figure out if the outcome will be worth it. Bone and Joint Military Medical Disqualifications
Bone and Joint Military Medical Disqualifications Bone and Joint Military Medical Disqualifications There are several medical conditions involving bones and joints that can disqualify otherwise eligible candidates from joining the U.S. military. Some of these ailments can be excused with a waiver depending upon the circumstances, but waivers are typically on a case-by-case basis. Many depend upon the injury or defect, or the technological advances in surgical repairs. Ancient wisdom reveals 6 rituals that will make you happy
Ancient wisdom reveals 6 rituals that will make you happy Ancient wisdom reveals 6 rituals that will make you happy People have enormous respect for ancient wisdom. They just donât read it. Funny thing is, weâre more likely to live happier lives when we visit the classics section than the self-help aisle. So how do we get the skinny on what one group of brilliant dead guys - The Stoics - had to say? Well, for that, I called my friend Ryan.Ryan Holiday is the bestselling author of The Obstacle is the Way and Ego is the Enemy. His new book is The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living. So what can the guys who invented the toga party teach us about living well? Letâs get to itâ¦1. Events donât upset you. Beliefs doYou get dumped by someone youâre totally in love with. Feel sad? God, yes. The world is going to end.Okay, same scenario, but afterwards you find out that person was actually a psychopath who killed their last three partners. Feel sad you got dumped? No, youâre thrilled. So clearly âgetting dumpedâ isnât the important factor here. What changed? Nothing but your beliefs. If you lose your job and believe it was a lousy position and believe it wonât be hard for you to get a better job, youâre unfazed. If you believe it was the greatest job ever and believe youâll never get another one that good - youâre devastated. Emotions arenât random. They follow from beliefs. Hereâs Ryan:The Stoics are saying there are no good or bad events, thereâs only perception. Shakespeare encapsulated it well when he said, âNothing either good nor bad but thinking makes it so.â Shakespeare and the Stoics are saying that the world around us is indifferent, it is objective. The Stoics are saying, âThis happened to me,â is not the same as, âThis happened to me and thatâs bad.â Theyâre saying if you stop at the first part, you will be much more resilient and much more able to make some good out of anything that happens.Skeptical? Sound too simple? Guess what? You couldnât be more wrongâ¦This part of Stoi c philosophy was adapted by famed psychologist Albert Ellis to form Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - which is now the dominant method for helping people overcome problems ranging from depression to anxiety to anger. Most of the bad feelings you have are caused by irrational beliefs.Next time youâre feeling negative emotions, donât focus on the event that you think âcausedâ them. Ask yourself what belief you hold about that event. And then ask yourself if itâs rational: âIf my partner dumps me, Iâll never get over it.â âIf I lose my job, my life is over.â âIf I donât finish reading this post, the writer will hate me forever.â Only the third one is true. The other two are irrational. And thatâs why you get anxious, angry or depressed.Revise your beliefs and you can change your feelings: âEven if they dump me, I can meet someone else. Itâs happened before and I got over it.â(To learn more from Albert Ellis about how to never be frustrated again, click here.)So youâre revising your beliefs to overcome sadness and anger. Awesome. But what about when youâre unhappy because youâre worried about the future?2. Control what you can. Ignore the restYou know the Serenity Prayer?âGod, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and Wisdom to know the difference.âReinhold Nieburh came up with it around 1934. The Stoics were preaching that basic idea, oh, about 2000 years earlier. The Stoics were really big on control. But they were not control freaks at all. A key part of Stoicism is just asking yourself, âCan I do anything about this?âIf you c an, do it. If you canât⦠then you canât. But worrying achieves nothing but stress. Hereâs Ryan:What the Stoics are saying is so much of what worries us are things that we have no control over. If Iâm doing something tomorrow and Iâm worried about it raining and ruining it, no amount of me stressing about it is going to change whether it rains or not. The Stoics are saying, âNot only are you going to be happier if you can make the distinction between what you can change and canât change but if you focus your energy exclusively on what you can change, youâre going to be a lot more productive and effective as well.âHereâs a quick visual to help get the point across: Next time youâre worrying, pause and ask yourself, âDo I have control over this?â If you do, stop worrying and get to work.If you donât have control, worrying wonât make it better. And going back to the first point, it might be a good idea to ask yourself what your belief is thatâs causing all this worry⦠Yeah, itâs probably irrational.(To learn more lifehacks from a variety of ancient thinkers, click here.)So sadness, anger and worrying are irrational responses and theyâre not the right way to react when things happen. So what is the right way to react to stuff that doesnât meet your expectations?3. Accept everything. But donât be passiveThis is the one everybody has trouble with. Nobody likes the word âaccept.â We think it means âgive up.â It doesnât.Letâs look at it this way: whatâs the opposite of accept? Deny. As in âdenial.â And nobody ever recommends denial.Albert Ellis told people theyâd be much happier if they removed the word â shouldâ from their vocabulary. âShouldâ is denial. Youâre saying your expectations deserve to override reality: âMy kids shouldnât be misbehaving!â (News flash: they are.) âTraffic shouldnât be this bad!â (Um, but it is.) âIt shouldnât be raining!â (Say it louder. Complaining might work this time.) Denial is irrational, and as we just learned, irrational beliefs are where negative emotions come from. So the first step is to accept reality. But that doesnât mean you have to be passive. You accept the rain. Itâs here. Denial and shoulds wonât change anything⦠but that doesnât mean you canât grab an umbrella. Hereâs Ryan:Acceptance to us means resignation but to the Stoics it meant accepting the facts as they are and then deciding what youâre going to do about them. The problem is that because we have expectations about how we want things to be, we feel like acceptance is settling, when in reality we have no idea what could have happened instead. This awful thing might have saved us from something much worse. Or maybe this is going to open us up to some new amazing opportunity that we canât yet conceive. The Stoics are saying, âLetâs not waste any energy fighting things that are outside our control, letâs accept them, letâs embrace them and then letâs move on and see what we can do with it.âNext time things donât go your way, donât deny reality. Accept it. Itâs here. Then ask if you have control over it. If you do, do something. If you donât, ask if your beliefs are rational.Thatâs how you go from: âIt shouldnât be raining! We canât go to the park! The day is ruined!â to âYeah, itâs raining. No park today. Letâs see an awesome movie.â(To learn the neuroscience behind mindfulness, another ancient happiness technique, click here.)Alright, weâve covered a lot of Stoic methods for beating bad feelings. That covers defense. Letâs talk offense. How do you improve your life?4. Choose whose child you will beI know, I know - that doesnât make any sense at all. Hold your horses, Iâll explainâ¦Everything weâve talked about so far happens in your head. And, as we learned, thatâs where the problems usually start. But if lifeâs gonna get better we need to learn from other people.Youâre not alone in this world. You have so much to learn from others. Role models. Mentors. And Seneca, one of the big cheeses of Stoicism, got the point across with this beautiful quote that I love:We like to say that we donât get to choose our parents, that they were given by chance â" yet, we can truly choose whose children we wish to be.When I spoke to Anders Ericsson, the professor who came up with the â10,000 hoursâ theory of expertise, he said the first step in being better at anything (and that includes life) is to find a mentor. Hereâs Anders:They need to talk to somebody that they really admire, a person that is doing something in a way that they would like to eventually be able to do. Have this person help you identify what it is that you might need to change in order to be able to do what that other person is doing. Interview that person about how they were able to do it, and then have that person help you identify what is it that you canât do right now and what are the ste ps towards reaching that desired level of performance.Next time you face a challenge, think of someone you admire. Research shows asking yourself âWhat would _____ do?â can have powerful positive effects on your behavior.(To learn how to find the best mentor for you, click here.)Role models and mentors are great for helping you be your best. But how do you make sure youâre actually improving? How do you know youâre making progress toward being the best you?5. Morning and evening rituals are essentialPlenty of research shows that rituals can really improve your life. What type did the Stoics recommend?Morning rituals and evening rituals. One to get you ready for the day, the other to reflect on how things went and figure out what to improve. Hereâs Ryan:The Stoics thought you should start the day with a ritual of reminding yourself of what youâre going to face. Marcus Aurelius said, âToday, the people that you face will beâ¦â and then he proceeds to list basica lly every negative trait you could possibly encounter in the course of a day. Thatâs not pessimistic, heâs saying, âNow that you know this, donât take any of it personally and try to understand why people might act this way and forgive and love them for that.â The Stoics believe you start the day with a meditation of whatâs to come and then you should end the day reflecting on what has transpired and what can be improved. The Stoics didnât believe in perfection. They felt we were all a work-in-progress. You can always be getting better. As Seneca said:As long as you live, keep learning how to live.(To learn the morning ritual that will keep you happy all day, click here.)Okay, weâve learned a lot of ancient wisdom. Letâs round it up and get the final tip that science agrees is one of the most powerful happiness boostersâ¦Sum upHereâs how ancient wisdom from the Stoics can help you be happier: Events Donât Upset You. Beliefs Do: Only the end of the world is the end of the world. Control What You Can. Ignore The Rest: Worrying never fixed anything. Accept Everything. But Donât Be Passive: Nobody recommends denial. Accept. And then do something. Choose Whose Child You Will Be: âWhat would Batman do in this situation?â Morning And Evening Rituals Are Essential: Plan for the day, then reflect on the day. Marcus Aureliusâ classic book Meditations starts out kinda weird. He mentions all the people who he feels indebted to for having helped him. Itâs basically a gratitude list. The Stoics were big on gratitude. In fact, in Meditations he wrote:Donât set your mind on things you donât possess as if they were yours, but count the blessings you actually possess and think how much you would desire them if they werenât already yours.A few thousand years later research would catch up with him on that one. Studies show mentally subtracting cherished moments from your life makes you appreciate them more, makes you grateful and makes you happier.âWhat if I never met my partner? What if my child was never born? Wow, I am so lucky to have them in my life.âYou donât need that shiny new thing in order to smile. Take a second to appreciate all the shiny things you already have that arenât so new.New is overrated. Software Application Developer Salary
Software Application Developer Salary Software Application Developer Salary If youre an application developer or planning to become one, its a good idea to take a look at what your peers are making before negotiating your salary. In 2011, the median salary for software application developers was $89,280. However, your experience, certifications, where you live and the company you are applying to can all play a role in how much you earn. Software application designers create applications like games and word processing programs, which are used on computers and other electronic devices including tablets, cell phones, and Smart TVs. Because applications are so abundant in the consumer market, many people dont realize that there are many other types of applications used by governments, manufacturers and other businesses. For example, a small business wanting a customized accounting software would hire an application developer, as would an oil company that needs an application to monitor flow levels. National Salary Overview The median salary for software application developers in 2011 was $89,280 according to O*NET, which means half of the developers earn more than this figure and half earn less. The Bureau of Labor Statistics last calculated the salaries of software developers in 2010. That year, the median salary was $87,800. The top 10 percent of earners in 2010 made over $133,100, while the bottom 10 percent made under $54,000. Requirements Most companies looking for software application designers require that candidates have a bachelors degree in computer science, software engineering or other related disciplines. For some positions, a masters degree is required, or experience in the industry for which the applications are needed. Creating applications for an insurance company, for example, may require familiarity with different platforms than creating applications for an automobile manufacturer. Regional Variations in Salary Application software developer salaries vary from region to region. It appears to be based on industries in each region rather than simply a question of supply and demand. Ohio, for example, had 21,470 application developers in 2008, more than twice as many as Michigan and nearly three times as many as Alabama. However, the median salary in Ohio comes nowhere near salary leaders like Massachusetts (22,300 positions), Washington (25,000 positions) and New York (26,280 positions). Following are 12 examples of regional median salaries as reported by each State in 2010 and compiled by CareerOneStop. The figures in brackets represent the top and bottom 10 percent thresholds corresponding to the national figures. California: $100,800 ($62,500 to $145,700)Massachusetts: $95,900 ($64,900 to $139,600)New York: $91,200 ($55,500 to $140,400)Washington: $92,900 ($64,000 to $131,900)Texas: $90,700 ($56,300 to $133,100)National: $87,800 ($54,000 to $133,100)Arizona: $86,500 ($54,500 to $130,200)Alabama: $82,800 ($50,500 to $119,900)Ohio: $79,700 ($51,400 to $114,200)Michigan: $77,600 ($55,000 to $112,900)Florida: $76,300 ($43,900 to $117,300)Indiana: $67,700 ($44,100 to $104,000)Arkansas: $65,400 ($41,600 to $95,900) Salaries Based on Experience First-time employees can expect to earn between $30,000 and $68,000 in their first year. Those with up to five years of experience typically earn between $39,000 and $77,000. Those with up to ten years of experience can earn between $49,000 and $91,000. If you have more than ten years experience your salary will generally range anywhere between $50,000 and $133,000. Salaries Based on Certification Microsoft Certified Professionals (MCP) represent both the lowest and highest paid application developers, with a range between $43,000 and $126,000, according to Payscales survey. Microsoft Certified Technology Specialists (MCTS) typically earn between $50,000 and $72,000. Microsoft Certified Application Developers earn between $64,000 and $93,000. Sun Certified Java Programmers (SCJP) generally earn between $58,000 and $93,000. Oracle Certified Associates (OCA) earn between $68,000 and $76,000. Salaries by Company A Payscale survey of application developers has estimated that J.P. Morgan Chase typically paid between $54,000 and $107,000 in 2012. Oracle Corporation pays between $71,000 and $96,000. The Walt Disney Company pays between $58,000 and $67,000. Some developers working for these firms may make more or less, as the figures are based only on those who volunteered their income. Few small to mid-size companies pay over $100,000. Those making over $100,000 are usually self-employed or work for usually work for companies with more than 5,000 employees. Outlook to 2020 In the United States, there were 520,800 software application developer positions in 2010. This should grow by 28 percent by 2020, with an estimated 664,500 positions. Each year there will be an average 19,790 job openings for software application developers until 2020, due to the creation of new jobs and employ replacement. Applications for mobile technologies like tablets and cell phones should continue to experience a lot of growth according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as should the healthcare industry and security software applications. As more software is made available on the Internet, usually at lower costs than traditional CD or DVD distribution models, there should be more demand for application designers to not only create new software but to help businesses customize the software they have. Many companies are focusing development on cross-platform applications that can be easily migrated from a computer to a tablet or cell phone with a minimum amount of customization. Microsofts transition to Metro Style Apps for its developers is just one example of cross-platform development The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not expect outsourcing to low-wage countries to have much of an impact on domestic jobs.
